Perturbations of the microbiota during neonatal and early life are associated with increased risk of severe upper respiratory viral infections. explore a potential mechanism.In a mouse model of perinatal microbiota perturbation, dysbiotic or control neonatal mice were infected with influenza virus carrying the model antigen OVA. The authors found that dysbiotic pups mounted less-robust effector and memory antigen-specific CD8+ T cell responses in the lungs and had significantly greater infection-associated weight loss.

Gene-regulatory network analyses revealed Nfil3 as a novel regulator of lung CD8+ T cell fate remodelling.
