Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is beginning to deploy an AI platform for assessing algorithms for a range of processes in supporting healthcare.

It said it is partnering with healthtech start-up Newton’s Tree – a member of NVIDIA Corporations’ Inception Programme – on using the company’s AI platform across the trust’s hospitals for the procurement and integration of third party AI products for patient care and operational efficiency.

It has cited the potential in supporting early cancer diagnosis and to reduce patient waiting lists.

The trust said the platform is vendor neutral, which makes it possible to procure, integrated and monitor third party algorithms.

Its chief scientific advisor, Professor David Brettie, said: “This collaboration has the potential to significantly enhance our diagnostic and treatment capabilities, ensuring high quality care for our patients in a safe way.”

Evaluation and implementation

Professor of clinical radiology Andrew Scarsbrook said that integrating the platform will enable Leeds Teaching Hospitals to rapidly increase its ability to evaluate and implement AI applications.

“This will ensure we are able to enhance patient outcomes whilst ensuring these technologies are safe and effective,” he added. “We are looking forward to developing prospective monitoring capabilities with Newton’s Tree in the coming months.”

The Newton’s Tree platform is built on open standards and supports the deployment and monitoring of AI software across all specialities, including pre-market products.

Scarsbrook said the move could demonstrate a scalable model that could be replicated across other NHS trusts.
