AdventHealth for Children's Down syndrome clinic in Orlando, Fla., opened Oct. 17 as part of a new lifespan program for adults and children with the condition.The initiative represents the first lifespan Down syndrome program in the Southeast. 'There is a tremendous need for medical providers who can take care of adults with Down syndrome.

In some areas, those medical providers are nonexistent,' Asef Mahmud, MD, lead physician for the program's adult care, said in an Oct. 17 news release. 'Now, patients and families can take comfort in knowing there's a comprehensive medical program to care for them their whole lives, from diagnosis through childhood and adulthood.'Primary care physicians who specialize in treating patients with Down syndrome will lead the clinic, housed on AdventHealth's flagship campus in Orlando.

Clinic staff will help coordinate appointments and treatment plans with the system's network of pediatric and adult specialists. The SMILE with Stella Tremonti Down Syndrome Clinic was established through a donation from Mark Tremonti, guitarist for the band Creed, and his wife, Victoria.
