When it comes to the global mental health crisis, taking a population health perspective that involves moving beyond the acute care model to a systems level approach is necessary. Given that there is a lack of behavioral health specialists globally, much of the responsibility for prevention, identification and support for mental health disorders tends to fall on the informal support systems of family members and friends or on people in one’s social network, including co-workers, supervisors and managers.

Despite decades of research demonstrating the relationship of high-stress, low-control, low-support workplace conditions with poor employee mental health1, it has not been until the COVID-19 pandemic that organizational practitioners have seriously begun to understand and address the workplace factors that contribute to decrements in the mental health of workers, and in turn, how the workplace can promote positive mental health2.

This increased attention by organizational leaders was the result of workers reporting unprecedented levels of depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions, leading many to change jobs or leave the workplace all together during the pandemic. Healthcare workers, for example, were especially affected by extremely long work hours, workplace harassment, little control, low support and fears for safety, all preventable workplace conditions associated with increased depression, anxiety and burnout3.

All of this is evidenced in a survey in which 92% of employees reported that it was “very” or “somewhat important” to work for an organization that provides support for mental health4.The workplace is a major social determinant of health and has been described as a “missing link”5 in addressing population mental health.
