NEW YORK – Phylo, a biology-focused applied AI research lab, has raised $13.5 million in seed funding to support the launch of Biomni Lab, an AI-enabled 'integrated biology environment' for research labs.

'Coming from computer science and AI research, it was clear that AI-native biology was going to require an entirely new approach,' Kexin Huang, cofounder and CEO of Phylo and first author of the original Biomni research paper, said in a statement. 'We built an integrated environment to unify the best of agent architectures with the tools biologists actually use, delivering extraordinary gains in their productivity, similar to what I've experienced with AI-supported software engineering.'.

As a use case, Phylo noted Biomni Lab's use by Ginkgo Bioworks to accelerate more than 10 complex cell-painting and transcriptomic analyses that were validated by Ginkgo scientists, reducing workflow times from weeks to hours.

'Phylo's Biomni Lab platform is user-friendly for all scientists to automate bioinformatics analyses, generate publication-quality figures, and even compare results with external datasets,' Ayla Ergun, senior director of data science at Ginkgo Bioworks, said in a statement. 'At Ginkgo Datapoints, we hope to incorporate Biomni as an everyday tool in our workflows.'.

Huang cofounded Phylo with Yuanhao Qu, a former Stanford University cancer biology PhD student, alongside scientific cofounders Jure Leskovec, a Stanford professor in computer science, and Le Cong, a Stanford professor in pathology.
